Rave On Lori Lee

Howdy Limpin Jimmy & Margie and welcome to the latest Robot Roundup.

The GreazeFest office has been running on all eights as we hurtle towards the heppest kustom kulture event on this side of the equator. It’s just 23 days away at the time of writing and it's approaching fast.

We are assembling a killer-diller GreazeFest weekend, with something for everyone, with candy-coloured dream machines, rockin' bands, DJs and burlesque performers, real live pinstripers, tattooists and kustom artists, vintage and retro fashions, lowrider cycles, tasty food and beverages and a gathering of the coolest people that you'd ever want to hang with.

Following is the latest updates on Greazefest, plus some exciting announcements, including this one about a new series of rockabilly gigs in Brisbane:

* New * Blue Suede Sundays

The Tempo Hotel is starting up a new series of free rockabilly gigs on Sundays!

Blue Suede Sundays will run at least once a month, on a Sunday afternoon, at Tempo Hotel in the Valley.

The afternoons will run from 2pm to 7pm and will feature a new rockin’ band or two every month.

Tempo Hotel is a new venue in Fortitude Valley, previously known as ‘Dooleys’ or ‘The Hacienda Hotel’ (if you remember the 80s). The hotel is located on the corner of Brunswick & McLachlan Streets. It’s easy to find and there is street parking in McLachlan Street on Sunday arvos.

The upstairs bar at Tempo is a big room with heaps of space and a new dance floor. There are cheap drink prices and a tasty meal menu.

The first Blue Suede Sunday kicks off on July 18 with very special guests Big Kitty & The Scaredy Cats.

This will be an exciting afternoon of live music and dancing. This will also be a neat way to warm up for the big GreazeFest weekend at the end of the month.

Where: Tempo Hotel, 388 Brunswick St, Fortitude Valley (corner McLachlan St)
Who: Big Kitty & The Scaredy Cats
When: Sunday July 18, 2pm to 7pm
Cost: Free
Park: On the street in McLachlan Street or in Chinatown car park in Ann Street.
Age: Over 18s only.
Info: www.robot.com.au

The following Blue Suede Sunday will be Sunday August 8 (the first Sunday after GreazeFest) and it’s also destined to be big!! I'll be announcing the August 8 line up shortly.

Other Neat Stuff

Mick Hadley & The Atomic Boogie Band are also playing a series of free Sunday Sessions at Tempo. You can catch Mick Hadley this month on Sunday July 11 and Sunday July 25.

Other gigs happening around the traps include The Sugar Shakers cd launch this Friday night (Jul 9) at the Holland Park Bowls Club and alt. country band Halfway's cd launch at the Troubadour on the same night.

Mimsy from Trailer Trash Tattoo and partner Pony from the Ten Fours are running a weekly DJ dance session on Wednesdays at Brothers St Brendan's Football Club in Rocklea, just down the road from the Showground. I'll be spinning some tunes at the next one (Jul 14), and hopefully picking up some new moves on the dance floor. Drop me a line if you want more info.

Lovers of real gone rockabilly should check out the new release 'Girls Gone Rockin', which is a triple cd set of killer tunes from the early years of rockabilly bands with female singers. Collecting gal comps can sometimes be hit and miss, as collections can be riddled with novelty throw-aways once you get past the headliners. But, I'm pleased to report this cd set doesn't fall into that lazy category. This is a cool 75 song selection of mainly rockabilly, with a bit of hillbilly and rhythm'n'blues, from the likes of Wanda, Janis, Brenda Lee, Jean Chapel, Barbara Pittman, Ruth Brown, Etta James, Ella Mae Morse, The Miller Sisters and the list goes on. This is a great companion set to the Routes of Rockabilly release, both on the Fantastic Voyage label, and they should sit in the 'frequently played' section of your collection. It has never been this easy to get your hands on the good gear. Find them at your local record store.

A friend of mine with a restored FX Holden is looking for a single lock up garage that is available for rent. Location is within Brisbane. If you have available space drop a line to Simone on simone_bennett@hotmail.com

Does anyone know of a 1968 Buick Riveria for sale around the Toowoomba region? It's a green 2-door with a white vinyl roof. If you have seen this car, please drop me back an email lori@robot.com.au.

That's enough raving for now. Read on for the GreazeFest news and see you all reeaaal soon,

* New * GreazeFest Cruise & Rockabilly Arvo

Heads up for the latest addition to the GreazeFest weekend. On Saturday afternoon, we are cruising to the Royal Mail Hotel (Brisbane Tce, Goodna) to catch the rockabilly sounds of hot new trio, The Vampers

Cars wishing to cruise will meet at Rocklea Showground at 12.30pm. Cars and/or punters not wishing to cruise simply turn up to the Royal Mail Hotel at 1.00pm.

The Vampers will be performing until 3.30pm. There's a timber floor at the venue, with plenty of room to dance. There are basic counter meals and it's free entry.

I wrote about The Vampers in the last Roundup and I’m happy to report they’ve just come equal-first in the one of the Brisbane heats in the Emergenza, an international battle of unsigned bands from all over the world. They hold comps in all major cities and The Vampers recent ‘win’ in Brisbane means they progress to the next round and have to do battle again.

What: The Vampers at the Royal Mail Hotel
Where / When:
Cruisers - meet at Rocklea Showground, Goburra Street entry, 12.30pm
Non-cruisers - meet at Royal Mail Hotel, Brisbane Tce, Goodna 1.00pm
Cost: Free
Ages: Over 18s only

* New * T-shirt designs released

Direct your peepers to the sensational GreazeFest tshirt designs.

The main design is a commissioned piece by Wildman Ishii from Moon Eyes in Japan. He has created a mind-boggling scrolled hot rod and double bass pinstripe that will make your jaw drop. There is also a striking red, white and black anchor design and a crossed pistons design, both by Lori Lee. All shirts feature the bands on the back.

Greazers who have pre-ordered a GreazeFest tshirt in their preferred size will receive the Wildman Ishii design as their first choice. Shirts can be swapped at the time of collection, depending on available stock.

You still have time to order your t-shirt in advance to secure your size and to receive the $5 discount. Order here: www.greazefest.com/tickets.html

When at GreazeFest be sure to check out the neat sticker and stubby cooler designs too.

Tickets over half sold out

GreazeFest tickets are selling quickly and the evening shows are over half sold out, as greazers from all around the country and getting ready for the biggest weekend of the year. As you know we have much more space for everyone at the new venue, but tickets are still flying out the door.

It’s interesting to note where the tickets are going – 50% have been posted to Queenslanders, 25% to NSWers, 15% to Victorians, with the remaining txt going to as far away as Western Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand. Of the hot rod early entries, over a quarter of them are driving to GreazeFest from outside of Queensland.

Be sure you order your GreazeFest tickets in advance to receive the discount. Friday night and Saturday night tickets will probably sell out, so make sure you secure your tickets to these nights.

If you are attending for three days, the best value option is to order the GreazeFest 3-Day Pass for $79 (you save $16).

Just visit the Ticket page for all this info and pick what works for you.

Answers to Common Questions

How do I get to Rocklea Showground?

You can approach the venue from north, south, east or west, so check your street directory or google maps to see what works for you. Just find the Ipswich Road Service Road and you’ll be right from there.

Will it be cold... ie... should I wear my leather jacket?

It will be the same as previous years at Souths.

We are closing in the stage end of the Showground Bar with fencing and thick curtains, so it will be just like a regular venue room. We’ll have big gas heaters in any cooler spots and in the smoking section.

Can we camp overnight at Rocklea?

No, definitely not. This is not the Toowoomba Swap!! Just book a motel room, designate a driver, or catch a cab. The venue is only 11km from the centre of Brisbane and is a lot closer than you may think.

Where do I park?

For the evening shows, drive into the showground off Goburra Street and turn immediate right into the car park, or if full, park along the fence line.

For Sunday, park in the Rocklea State School oval off Goburra Street.

Where are the night time gigs?

Inside the Showground Bar, in the same space the bands performed in at the Twilight Hot Rod Show.

How big is the dance floor?

There are two dance floors – one for the indoor stage and one at the outdoor stage. They are both about 8m x 8m.

Is there seating for the rockabilly nights in the Showground Bar? Can I reserve a table?

Yes, there'll be regular tables and chairs set up, just like the other rockabilly gigs that we hold.

No. We are not holding tables for patrons. Once you are at the venue, it is 'best in, best dressed' for table spots.

How do I enter in the Low Brow Art Show?

Bring your artwork, up to three small / medium pieces or up to two large pieces in a ready to hang condition to GreazeFest on Sunday at 9am. We'll have GreazeForce members there to hang your artwork and we'll have display cards for you to complete.
